“We humans will always have a limited grasp of what reality is,” says the astrophysicist Marcelo Gleiser when explaining his work exploring the cosmos. “And what could be more fascinating than being surrounded by mystery?”
The same holds true here on earth when we explore how the creatures around us experience light and color. The five-part DIscovery series Don’t Blink is a photographic and scientific exploration of this hidden world.
“The world that we perceive is a very narrow window,” explains Don Komarechka, the photographer whose images appear throughout Don’t Blink. “If we could see more of the spectrum of light than we normally do as human beings, I think the world would be really interesting. Cameras can capture infrared and ultraviolet and x-rays to look into the cosmos and see some very beautiful things that we to our own eyes will never be able to see.”
