In 2014, Kalle Ljung’s 73-year-old father set out to sail solo around the world. Ljung decided to join him during a stretch in Antarctica and the resulting video gives us a literal bird’s eye view of Earth’s most remote continent.
The father-son expedition began in Ushuaia, Argentina and crossed the notoriously rough Drake Passage. The trip went through Port Williams in Chile, rounded Cape Horn and headed for Melchior Islands in Antarctica.
Through drone footage and beautiful edit, Ljung reveals stark landscapes, towering icebergs, and waters that stretch endlessly toward the horizon. The significant challenge of shooting in Antarctica isn’t just the extreme cold; it’s the unpredictable weather conditions that can change in minutes. Ljung had to time his flights, navigating between wind gusts and snow while keeping his equipment warm enough to function.
What makes his aerial photography particularly striking is how it captures Antarctica’s scale and isolation. From above, the continent reveals its true character – a magnificent wilderness of blue-white ice, glaciers and sea.
